When searching for a toner or ink cartridge for your printer, you see references to RE-MANUFACTURED, COMPATIBLE and OEM. Do you know the differences between these products when choosing a replacement?

A OEM cartridge is the original product/cartridge manufactured by the maker of your printer and comes with the printer when it is purchased, usally called a “starter cartrdige”. OEM is the acronym for “Original Equipment Manufacturer.”

When your laser Printer or your inkjet printer needs a new cartridge you can choose an OEM or one of the following:

A RE-MANUFACTURED cartridge, which is actually an OEM cartridge that has been used before and is being recycled, is a product which has usually new parts/components and is then refilled with toner or ink. The re-manufacturing industry has come a long way since its inception and todays products are more reliable and less expensive to use then the OEM original products. They are also good for the environment since the plastic cartridges are being recycled.

A COMPATIBLE cartridge refers to a toner or ink cartridge that is not a re-manufactured cartridge and the cartridge is not from the original manufacturer of your printer. The COMPATIBLE is actually a new replacement product, not a re-manufactured product. These COMPATIBLE cartridges are a very reliable and cost saving choice.

The compatible and re-manufactured cartridges have become more and more popular with consumers because of the lower cost to purchase when compared to an OEM cartridge with savings from 20 to 80 percent.

The source of your COMPATIBLE AND RE-MANUFACTURED cartridges is important so be sure to use a company that displays the ISO (International Standards Organization) certification and is manufactured in a STMC (Standards Testing Methods Committee) approved factory.
